I’m currently flying over the South China Sea.
During my career, all of my business trips to Europe, the U.S., China, Hong Kong, and Southeast Asia were in business class.
There were many D global meetings, and since my main clients were major financial institutions, I usually had about two overseas trips a year.
The flight tickets were covered either by D or by the client, so business class was, of course, the standard.
However, on those flights I had little chance to actually enjoy the comfort of business class. On the outbound flights I had to spend the entire time reading English documents to prepare for work, and on the return flights I was always busy writing reports.
Attending D meetings or going abroad for client-related work was in addition to my regular duties in Japan. While I was away, no one covered for me, so if I didn’t get most of the work done during the flight, I would end up suffering once I got back. There was simply no room to relax with a fine whiskey in a spacious seat.
After retirement, I have always flown international routes in economy or premium economy (since business class is far too expensive). But this time, I chose business class.
Flying business class again after so long feels easy on the body, the meals are excellent, and I can fully enjoy the premium selection of drinks.
Back when I was still working, I never paid much attention to such fine whiskies, but this time—at 20,000 meters on a flight from the U.S. to Haneda—I accepted the stewardess’s recommendation and had Hibiki Blender’s Choice. And now, at 18,000 meters on the flight from Haneda to Kuala Lumpur, I’m enjoying Hakushu whiskey, again at the stewardess’s suggestion.
She even brought me both straight and with water, so I’m comparing them side by side. Of course, straight is the best way to enjoy the true flavor of whiskey.
By the way, I used to pronounce Hakushu as “Shirasu,” but the stewardess kindly corrected me—it’s actually “Hakushū.”
As a side note, I’m sipping Hakushu whiskey while listening to Chopin on my tablet through my own headphones.
Thank you.
