虎避け住居 という説明書きがある。

下記の英語解説を読むと こんなことが書いてある。

ウル-キンタ というところにもともといたオランアスリのSemaiという一種族(部族)が 頻繁に出没する虎を恐れてウルからクレバン地区に移った。

そこに ウルよりも もっと北の地区に住んでTemiarという別の種族のオランアスリがウルにやってきたのだが、Semai部族が残した土地と廃墟跡を見つけてそこに住居を建てて住んだ。

写真が その住居だ。

木の幹で高く持ち上げ、虎避け(とらよけ)対策を施してある。

高床式住居なのだが、ジャングルの中での高床式は虎対策という意味があったのだ。

ところで クレバンって クレバンAeon がある地域だが、ウル-キンタ って どこなのか と思って グーグルで探してみたら、車で20分ほどのすぐ近くだった。

1950年当時は 虎の出るジャングルの中だったんだなぁ。

This photograph reproduced from the 'Jungle Nurse' shows a 'tiger-proof' house of the Orang Asli (indigenous man) from the Temiar tribe.

Ulu Kinta was believed to be originally inhabited by the Semai tribe. However, they fled to Bekor and Changkat Chermin in the Kledang due to the threats from the tigers in Ulu Kinta. The Temiars from further north of Ulu Kinta, then wandered to Ulu Kinta and found the abandoned houses and the fields of the Semais. They took over the Semais land and built some impressive communal houses, dubbed as 'tiger-proof' houses. The houses were raised high on tree trunks, as a foil against the tigers.

It was noted that the entire house was built of bamboo and the house was surrounded by tapioca, maize, sugar cane and tobacco plantations in a two acre land area.
